Thinking about a career in insurance?
There is more to agency work than selling a policy. You might enjoy helping a customer work through a question, keeping a busy office organized, or building relationships with new clients.
This guide from Forney Group is a starting point for people exploring insurance careers in Texas. Here is how to work out what suits you and show an agency what you can bring.
Start with the work you want to do
- Sales: talking with prospective customers, listening to their needs and following up.
- Customer service: answering questions, helping with requests and keeping customers informed.
- Agency support: organizing records, coordinating tasks and keeping day-to-day work moving.
Titles can mean different things at different agencies. Read the responsibilities, not just the job title. For current licensing requirements, use the Texas Department of Insurance licensing guide.
Make your experience easy to understand
You do not need a page full of buzzwords. Give a hiring manager a clear picture of the work you have actually done:
- Your previous roles, dates and main responsibilities.
- One or two specific examples of helping a customer, handling a difficult conversation or keeping work organized.
- Any insurance licenses you currently hold, described accurately.
- The kind of role, location and working arrangement you are looking for.
Coming from retail, hospitality or another field? Explain how you worked with people and solved problems. Leave out confidential customer information and anything you cannot back up.
Ask the agency a few good questions, too
- What would a normal week in this role look like?
- What training and support would I get when I start?
- How is performance measured, and how does compensation work?
- Which licenses does this particular role require?
- What would you want me to learn in the first three months?
The answers will help you decide whether the role is right for you, not just whether you can get it.
Put your experience in one place
EmployeesRated lets you create a candidate profile with your work history and experience. Use it as a next step when you are ready to tell your story clearly.
Create your EmployeesRated profileThis is a career resource, not a job posting. Creating a profile is not an application to Forney Group or a promise of an interview.
